A little about my nutrition & diet background:
Nutrition and diets have played a huge role in my life both on a personal and professional level. I am naturally curious about new trends and why people “diet”, but I can’t just read about it I have to experience it too! Because of this curiosity and need for information I have plunged into many “diet” programs full force. I have also tried several diets to help gain better health, especially when confronted with the diagnosis of cluster migraines, fibromyalgia, and irritable bowl syndrome. Different “diets” did help with certain issues but what it all added up to in the end was simply getting back to the basics. Through my need to find health and wellness I became a Certified Personal Trainer and Health/Wellness Specialist with the Canadian Fitness Professionals (Can-Fit-Pro). I am also in the process of completing a diploma program in Holistic Nutrition and hope to gain my Master Herbologist designation in the near future.
Now that you know a little bit more about me, let me introduce you to the nutrition and dietary practices that have been most beneficial to myself, my family, and my clients.
Simply put, Traditional Foods are foods consumed in the way our ancestors ate them. The basis of Traditional Foods is that the food you consume be as nutrient dense and nourishing as possible. It is about choosing the best food options available locally and consuming it in a way that allows your body to extract the maximum nutrition from them. Traditional Foods are not only about selecting the best ingredients but how you prepare those ingredients for meals. Learning how to make yogurt, cheese, fermented food & beverages, sourdough, and other traditional cooking methods is where most people find traditional foods become tricky. However, with the right knowledge meal preparation can become a lot of fun. It is very gratifying to know that you have food stored for the winter and that your dependence on big grocery store chains is minimal.
When I first started learning about traditional foods I was introduced to The Weston A. Price Foundation. This non-profit nutrition education foundation is dedicated to continuing Dr. Price’s research and to returning nutrient-dense foods to our diet. I quickly became a member of the foundation and encourage anyone wanting to learn more about why traditional diets are beneficial to have a look at the work of Dr. Price.
This book is a great resources for anyone interested in Traditional Foods. Well written and very informative for both the traditional foods newbie and the well seasoned traditional foods cook! Highly recommended!
The Body Ecology Diet
Based on traditional cooking methods with an emphasis on fermented and probiotic foods, this diet is a good starting point for those looking to recover their health. The Body Ecology book is also a great resource full of information on how to restore and maintain health in a holistic manner.
At one point in my search for balanced health I went fully raw for 30 days and became a Certified Raw Foods Chef. While I see the benefits of going raw for 30 days, as a detox and regroup, I don’t find it to be the best answer, especially in Canada. I found I was eating a lot of high fat foods (nuts, seeds, avocado) and actually had a gallbladder attack from increasing my fat intake so drastically. This was largely due to the fact that I was not going Raw from a SAD diet (standard american diet). I was a healthy eater before going raw so my body couldn’t tolerate such a quick increase in fats. That being said, raw foods are seriously lacking in most diets and incorporating more raw into any diet can be a good thing. During the summer I maintain a 70% raw diet.
